When Your Mind Is the Villain: 8 Thoughts You Must Stop Trusting.

Updated: Dec 6, 2025

Our mind is a great trickster, and it enjoys playing with us, testing whether we will fall for its tricks or not. Its task is to completely become us — and to make us believe that it is us.

When Your Mind Is the Villain

Check this list and notice how often you are deceived by your own mind.

💎 “I would be happier if I had to work less.”

Our mind often uses this argument, claiming that we would be happier if we didn’t have to work.

We imagine a life full of entertainment and pleasures and deceive ourselves into thinking that it would make us happy.

But the reality is that idleness is often a major cause of boredom and depression. We are hardworking, creative beings.

We need to solve problems and improve ourselves in order to be happy.

💎 “It’s not me, it’s them.”

Our mind tries to make us believe that the cause of our unhappiness lies in the people around us — our spouses, parents, and so on.

We are ready to throw accusations left and right, like a toddler throwing toys in a kindergarten.

We must take responsibility for our life situation and do everything possible to improve it.

The moment we take responsibility for our life becomes the foundation of our true happiness.

💎 “To be happy, I just need to discover the secret of happiness.”

Most likely, there are no secrets to happiness or success at all.

No matter how much books, authors, and even our own mind try to convince us otherwise, there are no secret keys to the door of simple human happiness.

You yourself create the picture of your desired future, form your strategy, and then persistently and diligently work to bring it to life.

There are no shortcuts to the cherished goal, and no secrets.

Accepting this fact will take you much further on the path to happiness than anything else.

💎 “If only I had…”

Our brain tries to convince us that we would be happier if we had the right job, the right home, the right car, or something similar.

There is nothing wrong with wanting better things and circumstances, but they do not automatically make us happy.

They may lift our mood temporarily, but it quickly passes.

Anyone who wants lasting happiness must realize that the barrel of desires has no bottom, and it can never be filled to the top.

💎 “I love what I have and I don’t want any changes.”

By allowing ourselves to think this way, we create all the conditions for a downfall. Life is a journey of constant change.

Some changes we can control, others we cannot.

Resisting change or trying to keep everything under control is doomed to fail.

Change is inevitable. You must accept this and learn to float in the continuous flow of change.

💎 “If something didn’t happen for me, then it never will.”

Our mind often falls into despair and gives in to disappointment just a few steps away from success.

Never allow your mind to deceive you into accepting defeat.

You do not know what tomorrow will bring.

One single day may be all that is needed to reach your dream.

💎 “I know I shouldn’t, but…”

Our mind tries to deceive us by denying the consequences of our harmful habits.

This is especially true when it comes to health.

“I know I shouldn’t eat this, but if I can’t enjoy life, then what’s the point of living at all?!” Health problems are undoubtedly a challenge to our happiness.

Do not allow your mind to trap you in self-justification and indulgence toward your weaknesses.

💎 “I will never be able to.”

Our mind deceives us by claiming that we are incapable of something.

“I’ve never been good at this.” “Not at my age.” “Not with my talents.”

Don’t fall for this trick.

Your mind can be very inventive and can easily lead you around by the nose if you allow it. You are full of potential, and although your circumstances may add difficulty to the task, a little persistence and ingenuity will help you overcome everything.

If you think you can — you are right. If you think you can’t — you are right, too.
